Early Years Foundation Stage (Reception)
Our Early Years Curriculum provides children with a broad and balanced range of experiences that develop positive relationships, resilience, confidence, independence and a love of learning. It is carefully tailored to meet the needs, interests and experiences of our Hawthorn children and wider community.
We place a strong focus on developing speech and language, early reading and phonics, alongside mathematics, using high-quality adult-led and child-initiated learning. Our stimulating environment and ambitious expectations encourage children to become active, motivated and independent learners.
We foster a love of reading through quality texts, story times, nursery rhymes, library sessions and individual reading. Mathematics develops through exploration of number, shape and measure, supported by the Effective Maths scheme to ensure a smooth transition into Year 1.
Our Hawthorn curriculum is built around children's individual needs and interests, with staff observing, interacting and assessing learning to inform planning and next steps. Floor books capture and celebrate children's learning across our wider curriculum.
We value strong partnerships with parents and carers and provide regular opportunities to share learning, development and progress through ClassDojo, workshops, stay-and-play sessions and parents' evenings.
Our aim is for every child to develop the confidence, skills and independence they need to become enthusiastic and successful learners.
