At Hawthorn, we are all teachers of children with SEND (Special education needs and disabilities).

We strive to provide an all-round education for every learner, rooted in resilience, respect and creativity. We value them as individuals and recognise the different paths they go on; we aim to meet both their academic and wellbeing needs.

We aim to support our children at every step of the way as part of our community whilst preparing them for their next steps. We provide a broad, balanced and inclusive curriculum which is adapted to maximise achievement for all regardless of starting points, with inclusion for all at the heart of everything that we do.

Our Approach

At Hawthorn Primary School, we provide a wealth of opportunities for children to learn and achieve the best they can. For most children, inclusive teaching and reasonable adjustments meet their individual needs. However, some children also receive interventions that are outside the classroom. We assess our children on an individual basis and personalise support as required.

Supporting Children with SEND

We support pupils with SEND through a wealth of approaches:
We believe that high quality, inclusive teaching is the first step in providing all children with the education they need to succeed. Alongside this, we also offer additional curriculum support across the school when required.

Cognition and Learning:

Adaptation of learning in class by the class teacher through strong subject knowledge and knowledge of the individuals they teach.
Inclusive teaching is deployed across the school, with support being given and removed to offer support whilst promoting independence.
Effective and timely reasonable adjustments for individual needs
Individual or group interventions
Specialist advice and support from external agencies including Educational Psychologists, when required
Support from outreach partners, Rowan Gate, when appropriate

Communication and interaction needs:

Speech and language therapy support (SALT)
Social skills groups
Colourful Semantics
Assessments in school to identify next steps

Social. Emotional and Metal Health:

Transition and review meetings between school and parents
Referrals to outreach services (Maplefields, North Northants Specialist Support)
Links with CAMHS, Community Paediatricians, Mental Health in Schools Team
Meetings with our Family Support Worker and SENDCo to support with strategies at school and home.

Physical support:

Adaptation of the school building to facilitate access to the school buildings
Risk assessments
Emergency evacuation plan
Physiotherapist Occupational therapy advice and support where appropriate

Sensory Circuits

Every morning before school we offer Sensory Circuits. This is for children who would benefit from a 'soft' start to the day. It allows for emotional check-ins with members of staff and an opportunity to start the day away from the busy playground environment. At this time, we provide an alerting, organising and calming activity which research tells us benefits some children by getting them ready for learning.

Identification

We have a clear process for identifying potential special educational needs at Hawthorn. We believe that ongoing professional dialogue is the best form of communication, so we value the time we have to talk about needs as they emerge and work together to find a solution, valuing the voice of the child and parent throughout. We meet together as professionals to talk through the assess, plan, do, review cycle and record these steps for the children we are monitoring. This helps us to collate evidence, accurately review and not let concerns continue without action.
